Tuesday, 22 January 2019 08:38 AM EST

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A trial has started against a 31-year-old Syrian man who is charged with planning to explode one or more bombs in Copenhagen and stabbing random people with kitchen knives.

The suspect, who was not identified, arrived Tuesday at the Copenhagen City Court in handcuffs.

The man had an accomplice, Dieab Khadigah, who was sentenced by a German court in July 2017 to six-and-a-half years in prison.

Khadigah was arrested in Germany as he tried to enter Denmark with a backpack containing 17,000 matches, 17 batteries, fireworks, two kitchen knives and six walkie-talkies that the 31-year-old man had ordered.

The suspect facing the Copenhagen court had lived in Sweden since September 2015. In 2017, he was acquitted of arson of a Shiite mosque in the southern Swedish city of Malmo.
