Croatia's President Honors Victims of WWII Camp

Friday, 20 April 2018 08:38 AM EDT

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Croatian president has visited the site of a World War II concentration camp and honored its victims. Croatia's Jews, however, have boycotted the official commemoration ceremonies.

President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic Friday said the visit "evokes a feeling of deep regret over the crimes that took place here and respect for all the innocent victims." She adds that Croatia "unconditionally condemns crimes committed at this camp."

The Jasenovac camp, near Zagreb, was run by Croatia's pro-Nazi regime during WWII. Tens of thousands of Jews, Serbs and anti-fascist Croats were killed there.

Croatia's Jewish community held their remembrance last Sunday saying they are angry that the government hasn't fully outlawed "For the Homeland — Ready" slogan used by Croatia's Nazi-sympathizing WWII regime.

The main official ceremony takes place Sunday.
