LONDON (AP) — Britain's Supreme Court says a ban on identifying a celebrity involved in an extramarital relationship will stay in place until a full legal challenge is heard.
The legal battle has major implications for the balance between privacy and the right to publish in the U.K.
The Sun on Sunday newspaper wants to overturn an injunction barring it from naming the man, who is married to another famous person. The celebrity argued that publication would infringe the privacy of the couple and their young children.
The names of those involved have been published in North America, and the newspaper argues publication bans are meaningless in the Internet age.
Supreme Court justices ruled by a 4-1 margin Thursday that they couldn't see any "genuine public interest" in publishing the "kiss-and-tell" story.
