UK's Boris Johnson Seeks to Reassure Brexit Skeptics

Wednesday, 14 February 2018 06:37 AM EST

LONDON (AP) — British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is aiming to reassure voters worried about leaving the European Union that "Brexit is not grounds for fear but hope."

The Foreign Office says Johnson will use a speech Wednesday to argue for "an outward-facing, liberal and global Britain" after the U.K. leaves the bloc.

It is the first in a series of speeches by senior ministers that the government hopes will show unity and energy around Brexit.

But Britain's Conservative government is divided over what kind of relationship Britain should have with the EU after it leaves in March 2019.

Some ministers want to stay as close as possible to the bloc's borderless single market and tariff-free customs union. Others, including Johnson, want a clean break so Britain can pursue new trade deals.
