China wants Democrat nominee Joe Biden to defeat President Donald Trump because the former vice president and senator "has been soft on the Asian superpower for 47 years," Sen. Tom Cotton claimed Tuesday.
"Our intelligence community has said that China prefers Joe Biden to Donald Trump, and it’s pretty clear why," the Arkansas Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "Joe Biden has been soft on China for 47 years in public life, whereas President Trump has cracked down on them."
He pointed out that even in the current campaign, Biden said publicly that China is not the United States' competition and said "they are not bad folks," said Cotton.
"President Trump has imposed tariffs on China for taking our property and for not trading fairly with the United States," said Cotton. "He is now going to take action to make [China] pay for unleashing this pandemic on the world."
Biden, however, "embodies the failed consensus in Washington for 30 years since the end of the Cold War that China would somehow become a mature responsible country, as opposed to the pariah state they have become," he said.
Meanwhile, Cotton said Trump has a strong record of accomplishment for Americans, especially with the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
"We just had another great jobs report," he said, as "1.4 million new jobs were created. We're not back to where we were in the strongest economy in my lifetime, but we have beaten the expectation of almost every prediction."
That has happened, in part, because of legislation passed last spring to help families and businesses, but also because Trump has led a "smart, safe reopening," said Cotton.
"I think we are going to see more economic growth, more jobs, whereas Joe Biden would get the country back in lockdown," he added.
