China said Donald Trump was putting his and the Republican Party’s needs over those of the U.S., after the president said that under him, America would take its business out of China.

“I believe this is their act which tries to put their self-interests and the interests of their parties above the interests of the United States,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a briefing in Beijing on Friday. “Such political manipulation is unfeasible.”

Zhao was responding to a question from Bloomberg News about Trump’s speech Thursday to the Republican National Convention, where he said that “China would own our country” if Democrat Joe Biden were to be elected. Trump also said that under his presidency, the U.S. would not rely on China “one bit.”

“We’re taking our business out of China. We are bringing it home. We want our business to come home,” he said, accepting the Republican nomination for a second term.

Such moves by Trump would “violate the will of the business community and deny the existing cooperation between countries,” Zhao said.

Zhao said Beijing was committed to developing a China-U.S. relationship featuring mutual respect and cooperation, but would also uphold its sovereignty, security and development interests. “We stand to lose from confrontation and gain from cooperation,” he said.
