Canada is requiring all airline passengers wear face masks covering their mouths and noses.
"Canadians should continue to follow public health advice and stay at home if possible," Canadian Minister of Transport Marc Garneau said in a statement. "However, if you need to travel, wearing a face covering is an additional measure you can take to protect others around you, especially in situations where physical distancing guidelines cannot be maintained.
"Transport Canada will continue to ensure various transportation systems adapt to the most effective, preventive measures to protect Canadians."
The announcement notes it is a requirement for air travel whenever passengers cannot keep two meters of distance between screeners and passengers at checkpoints, whenever they cannot keep appropriate distance from other passengers or whenever airline employees or public health officials direct them to wear a mask, MSN reported.
If passengers cannot show they have a mask on them, they will be turned away at airports, the Transport Ministry statement said.
Passengers on marine transport such as ferries or by rail or bus are "strongly encouraged" to wear masks, and might be asked by transport operators to do so when appropriate distancing is not possible.
The Canadian Public Health Service put out an advisory on the proper methods of wearing non-medical masks, and how to make masks out of old T shirts and coffee filters, in both sewn and non-sewn versions.
