A 97-year-old great-grandmother became the oldest patient to survive the coronavirus in Brazil after she was released from the hospital, USA Today reported on Monday.
Gina Dal Colleto, who has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, was hospitalized at the beginning of the month and was diagnosed with influenza and COVID-19, according to a statement from Rede D’Or São Luiz, which controls the Vila Nova Star hospital where she was admitted.
Dal Colleto, who lives alone in Santos in the state of São Paulo and is the only survivor of her 11 siblings, was put on oxygen in the intensive care unit during her stay at the hospital.
"Even with almost a century of life, Gina has a very active routine and enjoys walking, shopping and cooking," according to a hospital statement.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that patients over the age of 85 have a 10-27% chance of dying from the disease – which is by far the worst survival odds of any age group.
In addition, some 80% of coronavirus patients have been over 65,
