Holt to Newsmax: US Strike in Iran Seen as Key Shift

By    |   Tuesday, 31 March 2026 10:58 PM EDT

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Blaine Holt told Newsmax on Tuesday that a U.S. strike on an Iranian ammunition depot in Isfahan using 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs could mark a turning point in the conflict as negotiations continue.

On "Greg Kelly Reports," Holt said the broader situation appears favorable for the United States, pointing to President Donald Trump's confidence about the war's trajectory.

"If they come to the table, that'll be good. But it doesn't matter whether they come or not, we've set them back," Trump said earlier at an executive order signing in the Oval Office.

"When the president is confident about the endgame, then you can know that he's not just whistling Dixie. He means it," Holt said.

Holt cautioned against placing too much weight on Iranian public statements, arguing they are largely aimed at a domestic audience.

"They're only trying to convince 90 million people that they're still in control," he said.

He also highlighted the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding the conflict, noting that several European nations have distanced themselves from U.S. and Israeli military operations, instead urging restraint and adherence to international law while declining direct involvement.

Holt added that there have been occasional differences between the U.S. and Israel regarding timing and next steps, underscoring that military operations and diplomatic efforts remain fluid.

He confirmed that indirect negotiations continue, citing involvement from intermediary countries.

"There is a negotiation that's going on. That much is very true. Pakistan and Turkey have both confirmed that," Holt said, adding that Saudi Arabia and Egypt have also played roles in facilitating backchannel communications.

Holt emphasized that reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical priority amid the war.

"Opening the straits is really a dire situation. We've got to do that next. So whatever's on that plate, let's get it done," he said.

Regarding the Isfahan strike, Holt said it targeted a major munitions plant and took place the previous night, with reports confirming the operation.

The president also shared video of explosions on Truth Social.
