Australia Police See Evidence of Islamic State–Inspired Terror in Bondi Massacre

By    |   Monday, 15 December 2025 10:07 PM EST

Early indications point to an Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack in the Bondi mass shooting, Australian police said late Monday, as investigators examined extremist material and explosive devices recovered during the probe, according to police statements reported by Reuters.

The gunfire erupted during a Hanukkah event in the Bondi area of Sydney, killing at least 15 people, police said, and wounding others as officers rushed to secure the scene amid fears of a broader extremist threat.

Here in the U.S., several Jewish organizations were clamoring for more security around their events, fearing a deadly recurrence.

Police identified the suspects as a father-and-son duo known to authorities whom they believe carried out the attack together.

Investigators said preliminary findings suggest the suspects were motivated by Islamic State ideology, though authorities cautioned the investigation remains in its early stages and conclusions could change as more evidence is reviewed.

As part of the probe, police said the gunmen's vehicle contained explosive devices and two homemade Islamic State flags, prompting bomb disposal units to examine whether the devices were functional and posed an additional risk, according to Reuters.

Australian police said the discoveries raised concerns that the attack could be terrorism-related, leading to heightened security and increased patrols across parts of Sydney as a precaution.

Despite those indicators, police later sought to reassure the public, saying there is no evidence at this stage to suggest other individuals were involved and no signs of a coordinated plot beyond the suspects' actions.

Authorities are also examining the suspects' background, including past interactions with security services, after Reuters reported that the men had previously been investigated by authorities over suspected links to Islamic State, though no charges were brought at the time.

Police said they are reviewing digital devices, communications records, and CCTV footage to determine whether the suspects maintained any recent contact with extremist figures or were radicalized independently online.

The attack has sparked renewed political debate over firearms regulation, with Australian leaders calling for tougher gun laws in response to the violence, Reuters reported.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said authorities would review whether existing firearm licensing and background check laws are sufficient to prevent extremists from accessing weapons, according to Reuters.

Police said the investigation remains active as forensic analysis and interviews continue, and that further details on motive and any policy implications will be released as evidence is confirmed.
