BANGKOK (AP) — The leader of Thailand's oldest political party says if he becomes prime minister after Sunday's election, he'll make careful but forceful efforts to undo undemocratic constitutional clauses imposed by the military government that took power in 2014.

Abhisit Vejjajiva, head of the Democrat Party and a former prime minister, told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday that the polls provide a chance for Thailand to get rid of its cycle of military intervention in politics and plan effectively for the future, as the country faces many challenges, including technological disruptions, an aging society and a high degree of inequality.

With Thailand still suffering from more than a decade of sometimes violent political upheaval, he said he believes he can best accomplish his goals by avoiding confrontations.
