The fight for Aleppo marks the end of the Syrian regime, Fred Fleitz, managing editor of LIGNET, said this week, noting that government forces appear prepared to destroy the city, Syria ’s commercial hub, to take it back from the rebels.
The worry, says Fleitz, is what the Syrian government’s admission that it has chemical and biological weapons means. It seems a sure sign that the regime knows it is doomed and is going to go down fighting. Assad says he will not use these weapons except in the case of foreign intervention, but given the regime’s charge that the rebels are backed by foreign nations, this is hardly reassuring.
