Two members of LIGNET’s forecasting team — Ambassador John Bolton and Dr. Mark Groombridge — were invited to Taiwan to meet with the president this week for high-level discussions about Taiwan’s relationship with China. While continuing to aim missiles at Taiwan, China for the past several years has been conducting a charm offensive with the goal of absorbing Taiwan into its political system. This effort, however, appears to have been unsuccessful. In fact, residents of Taiwan are increasingly thinking of themselves not as Chinese, but as Taiwanese. Once Beijing realizes that its efforts have been for naught, it will likely employ more aggressive tactics with Taiwan.
