LIGNET senior analyst Mark Groombridge says recent reports that former North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il ordered the production of a “massive amount” of new nuclear weapons are likely based on documents that were leaked intentionally — to re-assure the hard-line North Korean generals that their new leader, Kim Jong-Un, is committed to maintaining a strong offensive posture. It is also evidence, says Groombridge, that the new North Korea is not much different from the old, and is no less a threat to stability in Asia than it was. It may even pose a greater threat, in fact — to Asia and to the United States.
