Greek Parliament to Confirm New Government

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Lawmakers in Greece are set to hold a vote to confirm the majority in Parliament held by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' new conservative government following a general election on July 7.

New governments in Greece must be confirmed by a vote of confidence that follows a three-day debate after lawmakers are seated in the new session of parliament.

Stelios Petsas, the government spokesman, on Monday repeated a pledge by prime minister to legislate tax cut next month as well scrap longstanding rules that limit police access to university campuses. The government also plans to toughen detention and deportation policies for migrants whose asylum applications are rejected.

Mitsotakis' New Democracy party has 158 seats in the 300-member parliament.
