LONDON (AP) — Britain's Secret Intelligence Service director is set to give a rare public speech detailing the need for "fourth generation espionage" to combat hybrid threats.

Alex Younger, known in his role as head of MI6 as "C," will talk to students at his alma mater the University of St. Andrews in Scotland on Monday.

Excerpts released before the speech indicate that he will emphasize the need for human intelligence in a time of artificial experience and increased technological innovation.

Younger will discuss the ways in which Britain's adversaries are using cyber techniques and taking advantage of the "blurred line" between the cyber and physical worlds.

MI6 deals with international security threats. The official threat level in Britain is set at "severe," indicating that analysts believe an attack is highly likely.
