LIGNET: Afghan Province Becoming al-Qaida's Nerve Center

Wednesday, 30 January 2013 01:11 PM EST

As coalition troops prepare to leave Afghanistan next year after an 11-year war, one province on the Pakistani border is fast becoming a recruiting and training ground for al-Qaida and its regional franchises. The notorious al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri is believed to be using the province, called Kunar, to promote a new, decentralized al-Qaida network here – a nerve center that could threaten the entire region. What’s most worrisome is that the members of this network, known as the third generation of al-Qaida, or “al-Qaida 3.0” is less concerned with political aims that with hostage-taking, and murder.
