Ugandan Singer Bobi Wine Says he Will Run for President

Monday, 15 July 2019 08:38 AM EDT

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Bobi Wine, Uganda's pop star-turned-opposition leader, says he will challenge longtime President Yoweri Museveni in polls set for 2021.

But Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, says he is concerned about his safety after surviving what he believes was an attempt on his life last August when his driver was shot dead in his car following an incident in which the protesters threw stones at the president's convoy.

Wine was later detained and charged with treason. He denies the charges.

Wine said in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday that he is fearful because "there has never been a threat to this regime like the threat we pose to it today as a generation."
