KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan authorities have charged a fifth lawmaker with treason over his alleged role in an incident in which the president's motorcade was pelted with stones.
Francis Zaake, an ally of the pop star-turned-lawmaker Bobi Wine, was also charged Monday with unlawful escape from custody.
Zaake, who has been hospitalized with injuries allegedly sustained while in detention, was prevented last week from traveling to India for medical care. Police said that he had cases to answer.
His lawyer, Nicholas Opiyo, said on Twitter Monday that Zaake had been given bail so he can travel abroad for treatment.
Both Zaake and Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, say they were tortured while in detention. The government denies the torture allegations.
Ssentamu is in the U.S. for medical care.
