South African Campus Re-opens, 1 Month after Unrest

Tuesday, 29 March 2016 09:12 AM EDT

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African university campus that closed after violent protests a month ago has re-opened.

Koos Degenaar, the marketing director at the Mahikeng (also called Mafikeng) campus of North-West University, said classes began again Tuesday and that the situation is calm.

Students were ordered to abandon the campus on Feb. 25 after protesting students burned down an administration building and science center.

Since last year, university students have protested across South Africa for causes including lower tuition and more student housing. They have pressed for removal of campus statues from South Africa's era of white domination, changes to academic curricula and admissions policies that some student activists say are unfairly tailored for the white minority.

Apartheid ended when South Africa held its first multi-racial elections in 1994.
