2 Die in Temporary Bridge Collapse in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African media say two people died when a temporary bridge collapsed onto a Johannesburg highway.

Citing emergency responders, the website of news channel eNCA says those killed in the accident Wednesday at the M1 highway on the edge of the city's Sandton district included a taxi driver.

The news channel quotes a construction company as saying the temporary bridge was a support structure being used in the building of a pedestrian bridge over the highway.

Photographs of the scene show at least two vehicles partly crushed beneath scaffolding from the support structure. The accident happened in the afternoon, forcing road closures and traffic jams at rush hour.
