Chadian President, in Power since 1990, Seeks Another Term

N'DJAMENA, Chad (AP) — The longtime president of Chad is seeking another term in office in this central African country that is heavily involved in fighting Islamic extremists.

President Idriss Deby has been in power since 1990 and voters are choosing Sunday whether to renew his mandate for another five years.

The election comes amid concerns about Chad's human rights record. Four activists are currently awaiting verdicts after being accused of trying to disturb the peace and resisting arrest.

Chad, one of the poorest countries in the world, is contributing soldiers to the fight against Islamic militants in northeast Nigeria. As a result, the country has come under attack from Boko Haram through a series of suicide bombings. Chad is also home to the French military's operations in Africa.
