Cameroon Calls Video Showing Women Shot Dead Propaganda

Thursday, 12 July 2018 01:37 PM EDT

YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) — Cameroon's military is denying its soldiers were involved in a video that appears to show women with small children being blindfolded and shot dead as suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers.

The graphic video circulating on social media has caused an outcry and condemnation by groups including Amnesty International.

Cameroon's government has launched an investigation into the video, whose content has not been independently verified.

Government spokesman Issa Tchiroma Bakary says the military has remained professional in fighting Boko Haram extremists on its northern border with Nigeria. Cameroon also faces a growing conflict with Anglophone separatists in the west.

Cameroon military spokesman Didier Badjeck calls the video propaganda. He says that as a signatory to international treaties and conventions, the country knows what it means to respect human dignity at war.
