Burkina Faso Prime Minister Lashes out at Ex-president

Tuesday, 06 October 2015 12:51 PM EDT

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Burkina Faso's prime minister is lashing out at the country's former president who spent nearly 30 years in power.

Yacouba Isaac Zida said Tuesday that former President Blaise Compaore used his presidential guard "to stop the legitimate aspirations of the people of Burkina for a real democracy."

That same presidential guard was behind last month's short-lived coup that temporarily ousted Zida from power.

Compaore was forced from office in late 2014 by a popular uprising opposed to his attempts to prolong his rule.

Zida spoke at a ceremony Monday to mark the disarmament of the former presidential guard.

Authorities have announced that a military tribunal will now prosecute those found to have taken part in the coup.
