Burkina Faso Police Kill Suspected Extremist in Capital

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Burkina Faso's police director-general says a police squad has killed a suspected Islamic extremist after a shootout in the capital.

Lazare Tarpaga said Sunday that police tracked down extremists in Ouagadougou who were sent to recruit trainees. He said they fatally shot a man with a grenade and a gun Saturday. Tarpaga said police are pursuing three others, who are Burkina Faso nationals.

Security Minister Simon Compaore said the government intends to dismantle extremist groups in Burkina Faso.

Authorities months ago arrested some al-Qaida-linked extremists connected to a January attack in Ouagadougou that killed 30 people and the March assault in Ivory Coast that killed 19.

Heavily armed assailants attacked a military position earlier in October in the north near Mali, killing at least four soldiers and two civilians.
