Ukrainian billionaire Petro Poroshenko won a landslide victory Sunday in Ukraine's presidential election, earning a political mandate and with it a chance to ease tensions with Russia.

Many Ukrainians likely voted for Poroshenko for his pro-Western views.

However, as an oligarch who served in the regime of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, Poroshenko must prove his independence and make good on his promise to root out corruption crippling the Ukrainian economy.
