WTO Chief Make Case for World Trade in Face of Criticism

Wednesday, 27 July 2016 10:14 AM EDT

GENEVA (AP) — The head of the World Trade Organization says it needs to do more to make the case for the benefits of trade in the face of claims that it has been responsible for shrinking manufacturing jobs in places like the United States.

Roberto Azevedo also said Wednesday after a WTO meeting that he plans to seek a second term at the organization's helm.

The Brazilian defended the WTO's role in helping resolve disputes like a recent U.S. complaint alleging China unfairly limits raw materials exports, hurting U.S. manufacturers.

He declined to comment on weekend remarks by U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump to NBC TV suggesting Trump might pull the U.S. out of the WTO if its rules prevent his hopes to set fees on U.S. companies that ship jobs abroad.
