Turkish Jets Strike Kurdish Rebel Targets in Northern Iraq

Monday, 29 August 2016 11:19 AM EDT

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's state-run news agency says Turkish jets have pounded suspected Kurdish rebels targets in a new cross-border raid in northern Iraq.

Anadolu Agency says the planes struck targets of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in northern Iraq's Gara region on Monday.

Turkish jets have frequently attacked PKK positions across the border in Iraq, since a cease-fire between the rebels and the government collapsed last year.

Last week, Turkey sent tanks across the Syrian border to fight the Islamic State group and to halt the advance of Syrian Kurdish groups affiliated with the PKK.

On Sunday, two separate blasts in the Turkey's Kurdish-dominated southeast killed one Turkish soldier and wounded eight others, and Kurdish militants launched a rocket-propelled grenade against a civilian airport.
