2 People Missing as Weather Causes Havoc in Spain, Portugal

Sunday, 14 February 2016 03:34 PM EST

MADRID (AP) — Rescue services are searching for two missing people after heavy rainfall and strong winds damaged buildings and blocked roads in northern Spain and Portugal.

Authorities say emergency services are searching Sunday for a 50-year-old man who fell off a bicycle and was carried away by floodwaters in the town of Albergaria-a-Velha, northwestern Portugal.

A search was also underway for a 73-year-old man who was swept away to sea while fishing near Castro Urdiales in northern Spain, emergency services said.

Flooding has swamped the city of Agueda in Portugal and affected the port of Pontevedra in Spain. Landslides have blocked roads north of Porto in Portugal and in Rioja, Spain, authorities said.

Spain's emergency service 112 said it had been called out to assist people stranded by more than 300 landslides.
