Spain Parties Wrap up Campaigns Ahead of Sunday Vote

Friday, 24 June 2016 05:30 AM EDT

MADRID (AP) — Spain's political parties are wrapping up two weeks of campaigning ahead of this weekend's unprecedented repeat election aimed at ending a deadlock that has left the country with a caretaker government after an inconclusive vote in December.

Campaigning for the June 26 vote finishes at midnight Friday with final rallies by the four main parties: the ruling conservative Popular Party, the Socialists, the far-left Unidos Podemos alliance and the business-friendly and centrist Ciudadanos.

Polls suggest the Popular Party will win the most votes as it did in the Dec. 20 election but again fall far short of the parliamentary majority in had 2011-2015.

The vote is expected to lead to another stalemate and further months of party negotiations to try to form a government and spare Spain a third election.
