Party Leaders: Slovakia Talks to Form New Gov't Going Well

Tuesday, 15 March 2016 05:29 PM EDT

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — The leaders of four parties negotiating to form a new coalition government in Slovakia say they have reached a deal on their possible government's priorities.

Slovakia's president has asked Prime Minister Robert Fico, whose party won the country's parliamentary election, to try to form a new government.

Fico's leftist Smer-Social Democracy won the March 5 election with 49 seats in the 150-seat Parliament and needs coalition partners. Over the last four years, Smer governed alone.

After his talks with leaders of the ultra-nationalist Slovak National Party, the conservative Net party and a party of ethnic Hungarians on Tuesday, Fico said the negotiations are going well.

Fico has a deadline of Friday for the talks.
