European Parliament: Polish Policy Still against Democracy

Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:09 AM EDT

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The European Parliament is slamming Polish government policies as anti-democratic for the second time this year and urging a lasting solution by the end of next month.

Members of Poland's conservative ruling party brushed off a resolution the parliament adopted Wednesday as non-binding. They said the European Union should focus instead on such issues as the migrant crisis and Brexit.

The vote in Strasbourg was 510-160 with 29 abstentions.

The resolution says the judicial paralysis that has resulted from government interference with Poland's major constitutional court is endangering democracy, fundamental rights and the rule of law.

The European Parliament, which is the EU's legislative body, approved a similar resolution in April.

The lawmakers also pointed to problems with new controls on public media, increased police powers and women's rights.
