WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's main opposition party is avoiding talks that could solve the nation's political crisis and instead complains about Poland to European institutions, the prime minister said Monday.

Poland's ruling conservative Law and Justice party is locked in a bitter political conflict with opposition parties, which is stalling the work of the Constitutional Tribunal. The Venice Commission, a European body of law experts, recently urged all of Poland's political forces to compromise. It said the conflict could undermine Poland's democracy and the rule of law.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo has asked parliament to find a compromise and has said that the government is ready for talks.

But on Monday she said that politicians of the liberal Civic Platform, which ruled until November, "want no talks and instead travel, for example, to Brussels and complain about Poland and escalate the conflict."

"This is not the path that true Polish citizens, true patriots should be following," said Szydlo, whose party is very sensitive over the issue of Poland's sovereignty, especially while it is introducing sweeping changes to some key legislation that covers state media, security and the economy.

Civic Platform leader Grzegorz Schetyna recently was involved in talks in Brussels about a European Parliament resolution on Poland planned for later this week. It is expected to criticize the government. In January, Szydlo fielded questions in the European Parliament about her government's policy.

Szydlo said that other solutions to "calm the situation" will be sought if the opposition refuses talks. She did not specify the alternative solutions.
