2 Dutch Police Officers Charged in Chokehold Death

Monday, 19 September 2016 08:39 AM EDT

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Dutch authorities are prosecuting two police officers in the death of a man who died a day after being put in a chokehold for resisting arrest.

The death on June 28, 2015, of 42-year-old Mitch Henriquez, who came from the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba, sparked days of rioting in The Hague that drew comparisons with the protests in the U.S. following deaths of black men at the hands of white police officers.

Prosecutors announced Monday that two of the five officers involved in Henriquez's arrest will face charges including assault causing death and manslaughter.

Prosecutors say they are suspected of using disproportionate force - one of the officers used a chokehold on Henriquez and the other hit him in the face and pepper-sprayed him.
