Sunday, 11 September 2016 10:42 AM EDT

SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 has struck Macedonia, sending people out onto the streets for safety in the capital, Skopje. There have been no immediate reports of extensive damage or injuries.

The Potsdam-based German Research Centre for Geosciences, or GFZ, says the quake struck just after 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) Sunday at a depth of 26 kilometers (16.16 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.3, with its epicenter about four kilometers east-northeast of Skopje.

A smaller quake was recorded earlier in the day.

A large earthquake in 1963 leveled much of Skopje, killing more than 1,000 people.
