Lithuanian Liberal Leader Quits over Bribe Allegations

Wednesday, 18 May 2016 01:57 PM EDT

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — The leader of Lithuania's opposition Liberal party has resigned as lawmaker after being accused of taking bribes from one of the largest business groups in the Baltic nation.

Eligijus Masiulis said Wednesday after parliament revoked his immunity that "I will tell everything when the time comes."

The resignation, along with allegations that he took at least 106,000 euros ($120,000) in bribes, was a blow to the Liberals, which rank among the most popular parties ahead of October's national election. A former transport minister, Masiulis was considered a potential prime minister candidate.

Last week, a top official with the MG Baltic group was detained, allegedly for financing the party's election campaign, according to local media.

Since 2011, the sponsorship of political organizations by private companies has been banned in Lithuania.
