Greek Ex-finance Chief Faces Trial over Wealth Declarations

Wednesday, 21 September 2016 01:16 PM EDT

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Court officials say a former Greek finance minister has been indicted for allegedly failing to make required wealth declarations while he was a top adviser to the prime minister.

Gikas Hardouvelis held the finance portfolio in Greece's previous, conservative government from June 2014 to January 2015, when the current, left-led administration took over.

Hardouvelis previously spent seven months as an adviser to former prime minister Lucas Papademos. The indictment issued Wednesday alleges he failed during that period to make the wealth declarations that many Greek officials and civil servants are legally bound to submit annually.

A trial date hasn't been set.

If proven in court, the misdemeanor charge carries a maximum 5-year prison sentence. Hardouvelis was not immediately available for comment.
