After Shooting, German TV Drops Counter Strike Broadcast

Friday, 29 July 2016 09:18 AM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — A German TV channel has canceled plans to broadcast the finals of a global tournament of the video shooting game "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" in response to last week's slayings in Munich.

Authorities say the Munich shooter, identified only as David S., was an ardent "Counter-Strike" player, sparking a debate in Germany about violent games. The 18-year-old killed nine people at a mall on July 22 before killing himself.

A spokesman for ProSieben MAXX, Michael Benn, said the channel had decided not to broadcast any more first-person shooter games "for the moment."

The ELEAGUE semi-finals of "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" start Friday, with the final taking place Saturday. The German team mousesports is among four still in the competition.

German fans will still be able to watch the event using online streams.
