Police: Syrian Held in Germany Had Contact with IS Recruiter

Wednesday, 21 September 2016 11:12 AM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — Authorities in Germany say a 16-year-old Syrian refugee arrested in the western city of Cologne had contact with a recruiter for the Islamic State group.

Police and prosecutors say the unnamed teen was detained Tuesday by a tactical response team at a housing facility for migrants in the city's Porz district.

Officials said in a statement Wednesday that initial evidence indicating the suspect became radicalized within a short period of time appeared to have been confirmed.

They said records found on the teenager's phone show he had communicated with a person abroad linked to the Islamic State group "who wanted to win the young Syrian over for Islamist activities."
