BERLIN (AP) — A 43-year-old man who lived in isolation at his parents' home in Bavaria for three decades has been taken to a psychiatric hospital, and police say they're investigating whether the parents did anything wrong.

Police spokesman Juergen Stadter said Wednesday that police went to the home in Freienfels, near Bayreuth, on Sept. 21 after receiving a tip and found the man in a neglected condition. Stadter said he was "unkempt, unwashed, but well nourished."

Stadter said the man wasn't constrained and had several rooms to himself. He added: "We're investigating whether he stayed inside for all those years of his own will."

Police are investigating the man's parents, who are in their late 70s, on suspicion of possible deprivation of freedom and causing bodily harm by neglect.
