PARIS (AP) — The son of the president of Equatorial Guinea is being sent to trial in France after a years-long investigation into alleged misspending of millions of euros of public funds.

Equatorial Guinea Vice President Teodorin Obiang Nguema is accused of acquiring real estate, luxury cars, art and other goods in France with public funds from his country.

Transparency International said Tuesday that orders to send Obiang to trial for money laundering and other charges were given on Monday, but a date for the trial has yet to be set.

It noted this will be the first trial of a top dignitary of a nation targeted in a campaign against ill-gotten gains that it has run together with the Paris-based group Sherpa.

The two organizations initiated the Obiang investigation in 2007.
