CANNES, France (AP) — The Kristen Stewart-starring film "Personal Shopper" was met by a smattering of boos at the Cannes Film Festival, although critics praised her performance in the psychological drama.

"Personal Shopper," which is competing for the top Palme d'Or prize at Cannes, is directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas. It's their second film together following 2014's acclaimed "Clouds of Sils Maria."

At a press screening Monday night, a handful booed the film. Critics, however, were mostly enthusiastic and hailed Stewart's leading performance. "Personal Shopper" is about a star's fashion assistant who can communicate with the spirits and is grieving for her deceased twin brother.

Booing is a long tradition at Cannes, though many jeered or divisive films have gone on to become beloved. The film's official red-carpet premiere is being held Tuesday.
