Former Members of '60s Group The Tremeloes Found Innocent

Friday, 22 July 2016 08:55 AM EDT

LONDON (AP) — Two members of the 1960s British pop band The Tremeloes have been found innocent of indecently assaulting a teenage girl after a performance 48 years ago.

A judge at Reading Crown Court Friday ordered Leonard Hawkes and Richard Westwood be found not guilty after prosecutors said there was no evidence to introduce.

Guitarist Westwood released a statement afterward saying his reputation and lengthy career had been tarnished by bogus charges that should never have been brought.

The 73-year-old said it's "a disgrace and wholly misleading that a single claim dating back more than 48 years ago was never properly investigated before my good character was attacked."

The Tremeloes arrived on the pop scene at about the same time as the Beatles and enjoyed a number of hits.
