2 British Men Killed in Austrian Alpine Road Plunge

Friday, 24 July 2015 10:14 AM

VIENNA (AP) — Police say two British men in their 20s have died after their car broke through a guard rail on a high alpine road in Austria and tumbled 300 meters (nearly 1,000 feet) over steep terrain.

Police spokeswoman Eva Wenzl says Friday's accident apparently occurred as the two were racing another car on a stretch of road nearly 2,500 meters (over 8,000 feet) above sea level.

Police say one man was 22 and the other 25. They are not being identified in line with Austrian confidentiality rules.

They lost control of their car near the mountain village of Fusch, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Innsbruck.

Police say the other car's driver initially kept driving but they have now identified him or her.
