SKorea Offers to Repatriate Chinese War Dead

By    |   Monday, 01 July 2013 03:58 PM

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has offered to repatriate the remains of approximately 360 Chinese soldiers from the Korean War. Park made the offer during a weekend visit to Beijing, where she met with Vice Prime Minister Liu Yandong.

Up to 750,000 Chinese and North Korean troops were killed in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953, and more remains are discovered each year in South Korea. At present 740 North Koreans and 367 Chinese war dead are buried in a cemetery in Paju, South Korea, the London Telegraph reported.

Since 1981, the remains of 43 Chinese war dead have been returned via North Korea and through the border village of Panmunjom. The South Korean leader’s initiative may make it possible to return the bodies directly to China.

After delivering a lecture in Beijing, Park said it would be impossible for North Korea’s economy to grow if the communist government continued to spend money on nuclear weapons.

The North Korean regime’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea on Monday denounced her comments as “unacceptable provocations against the country’s dignity.”
