GENEVA — The United Nations top human rights body has appointed three experts from Australia, Serbia, and Indonesia to carry out an inquiry into North Korea for possible crimes against humanity.

The 47-nation U.N. Human Rights Council said Tuesday it has appointed Australian retired judge Michael Donald Kirby and Sonja Biserko, founder and president of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, to join Indonesian lawyer Marzuki Darusman on the three-member commission.

Council president Remigiusz Henczel said Kirby will serve as chair.

In March, the Geneva-based council approved a one-year probe — based on the recommendation of Darusman, already the U.N. special rapporteur for North Korea — into what U.N. officials describe as suspected widespread and systematic human rights violations in North Korea.

North Korea has called the U.N. moves political meddling.
