JOHANNESBURG — An opposition leader in South Africa has submitted a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma.

Lindiwe Mazibuko brought the motion forward Thursday in the National Assembly on the grounds that under Zuma's leadership the justice system has been politicized, corruption and unemployment have risen, the economy has weakened and access to education has been violated.

The motion was backed by eight opposition parties but has little chance of passing.

Another opposition leader, Mosiuoa Lekota, also cited a violent strike at a platinum mine that killed 46 people, the downgrading of South Africa's credit rating by two major agencies and big spending of state funds on Zuma's rural residence.

The motion would have to be debated in parliament. Most seats in parliament are held by Zuma's African National Congress.
