SAfrican Police Go to Court in Man Dragged Case

Friday, 08 March 2013 04:50 AM EST

JOHANNESBURG — Several dozen protesters have gathered outside a South African courthouse for a bail hearing for eight police officers charged with murdering a man who was dragged from a police vehicle last week.

The killing of Mido Macia, a taxi driver from Mozambique who died in police custody on Feb. 27, shocked South Africans and viewers around the world after graphic video footage of him being tied to a vehicle by uniformed officers and dragged down a street was broadcast and posted online.

The protesters who demonstrated Friday outside the Benoni Magistrate's Court, east of Johannesburg, say the officers should not be granted bail.

South Africa's police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, says Macia suffered head injuries and internal bleeding. He died in Daveyton township.
