MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — A police official says suspected Islamic extremists have killed a teacher in a northeast Nigerian village.

Borno state police commissioner Lawan Tanko said Wednesday that Boko Haram suspects tracked a man to his house in Wulgo late Monday, killed him and injured another man who remains in the hospital. Wulgo village is near Nigeria's border with Cameroon.

A local teacher and a security personnel said the men both were secondary school teachers. Both spoke on condition of anonymity, the teacher for security reasons and the security personnel because he was not permitted to speak to the press.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden," has killed scores of pupils and burned down scores of schools in its mission to make Nigeria an Islamic state under Shariah law.
