Niger Extradites Ex-Gadhafi Official to Libya

Sunday, 16 February 2014 10:43 AM EST

NIAMEY, Niger — Niger says it has extradited a former high-ranking intelligence official under Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi who was "plotting against the Libyan state."

Government spokesman Morou Amadou said Sunday that Abdallah Mansour was extradited last week. He said the West African nation would not tolerate the "destabilization of our neighbors from our territory."

Dozens of Gadhafi loyalists fled to Niger in 2011 as the autocratic leader lost his hold on power prior to being captured and killed.

Niger has not complied with Libyan requests to hand over al-Saadi Gadhafi, one of Moammar Gadhafi's sons, saying he might be killed.

While Libya has criticized the presence of Gadhafi loyalists in Niger, Niger has expressed concern about "the terrorist threat" posed by the lack of security in southern Libya.
